Ed Buffman “Mixed Media Sculptor” artist statement.
I have always understood the world through my five senses more so than through the written word. I see my life and work process as a combination of planning and discovery, a constantly evolving pathway. My sculpture is a manifestation of that way of thinking, through light, line, texture and emotion.
About Me
The passing of a dear friend that I had known since college motivated me to sculpt again. I started sculpting in the 70’s while breaking into the film & television business, I pushed it aside as I became more involved in that endeavor. I continue to work today as a director and I truly love the multi voiced, collaborative atmosphere. I equally love and appreciate the singular, creative process of sculpting. The absolute sense of time pushes me to this day and drives me to rediscover and express myself through this art form.
My Process
I approach each piece with the vision or thought of a single line in space. Once I initiate that first line, the piece evolves with some planning and a good amount of discovery. I find that the aspects of discovery encompass more than just the materials at hand; emotional discovery seems to come into play as well. For me the emotion and meaning of the given piece is not always apparent at the onset. There are times when I start a piece, walk away for some time and then come back to it. As I work with the wood there is a sense of finding what is there. The grain, texture and variance in color influence me. Once I have the rough shape I then start to create the textures that really define that particular form. I utilize the naturally occurring textures in confluence with the ones that are created through my manipulations of the various surfaces.
